Nobuta wo Produce starring Horikita Maki, Yamashita Tomohisa and Kamenashi Kazuya.
Kotani Nobuko (aka Nobuta) is a transfer student. Starting a new school is hard enough but when you're not very popular and don't talk very much you tend to be the center of bullying.
Starting the first day, Nobuta is bullied by the other kids in her class. Having grown up with a step-father that wasn't very affectionate towards her Nobuta doesn't fight back against the bullies.
Kiritani Shuji is the most popular boy in school. He's always pretending to be popular because he feels that is what is expected of him and what everyone else is happy with. He is worried that if he shows his true self the others wouldn't think so highly of him. Is often mean to Akira for what appears to be no reason other than the fact that Akira never pretends to be anything other than himself.
Kusano Akira is the eccentric of the bunch. Born rich, he left his father's house because he didn't want to inherit the family business. He's a bit old and often dances to the beat of his own drum. He believes that Shuji and himself are the best of friends when in actuality Shuji can't stand him.
Shuji decides that the only way Nobuta will survive at school is to give her a "popular makeover" though he doesn't want anyone to know that he is actually helping her because it could ruin is reputation with the rest of the school. Akira agrees to help and doesn't care if the other students see him being friends with Nobuta.
Akira and Shuji often rescue Nobuta when she is getting bullied by the other classmates. Together the find ways to make Nobuta more popular at school, from getting her fashionable clothes to wear or getting her hair styled. Nobuta protests on some accounts that she doesn't want to change certain things about herself but is convinced in the end.
This is a great storyline. I like how they have random plot twists throughout the show. Things you wouldn't even expect happen and things that make no sense at all find their way into the story but you don't mind because it just adds to the entertainment. I could definitely watch this show over and over again.
