The first time I watched this movie, I fell in love with it. Two girls, who happen to both be named Nana and are the same age have a chance meeting on a train to Tokyo. One Nana is a rocker chick, the other is more girlie girl (later nicknamed Hachi so I will call her that to keep from getting the two confused).
Hachi and Nana go their separate ways after getting off the train. Hachi goes off with her boyfriend, the reason why she moved out to Tokyo. It is not really said where Nana goes. The only thing we do know is that she is there to make it big in music.
A short time goes by and they end up meeting at an apartment that they are looking to rent. Nana's friend and bandmate suggest they become roommates. And so the friendship begins.
The thing that caught my attention most about this movie is the music. The very first scene in the movie is Nana's band The Black Stones playing a live concert. Nana sings in in very good english. It's different but in a good way. You can hear a hint of her Japanese accent but while she's singing, to me, it's very faint. The other songs in the movie are just a good if not better than that very first song you hear.

I enjoyed the storyline of the movie. I liked how it wasn't just focused on Nana and Hachi's storyline but on their lives separate from the one they have together. My favorite would have to be the relationship between Nana and Ren. Ren left Nana and The Black Stones/Blast to play guitar for the band Trapnest, who already had a record label going for them. Nana, being proud and stubborn, did not fallow him. She decided that if she were to go to Tokyo it would be by her one means and not be a lovesick girl fallowing a boy.
It's just a really heartfelt story. Friendship, love, betrayal, and great music. I recommend anyone who is interested in watching Japanese live actions to watch this movie. It was the first one that I watched and now I'm hooked. There are two movies for it and it is also a anime and manga series. I've watched a few episodes of the anime and it is also good. They go into more details with Nana and Hachi's past before they met each other. So, if you're not interested in the live action, you could also check out that anime. I have not read the manga so I don't know if it's any good but I wouldn't mind checking it out if it's anything like the movie or anime (or even better than both).
