Yamaguchi Kumiko is the new teacher in school. Her background about being the 4th generation to the Ooedo Group, which is a notorious Yakuza clan, is to be kept secret so as not to cause problems for the school with other parents. What will happen if she's exposed? Her future as a teacher is compromised and she must leave the school.

Yamaguchi is to be in charge of a classroom full of delinquents. Although the other teachers think it's impossible to control them, Yamaguchi has hopes for the class and believes she will make a difference in their lives.

There are 3 separate seasons for Gokusen but for each season the idea is pretty much the same. The only differences are the school she works at and the students she teaches.

The students are trouble from the beginning. Yamaguchi (later nicknamed Yankumi by her students in season 1) goes above and beyond to help her students even when they clearly don't want her help.

For me, the main message for all seasons is the same. Just because society looks down on you and pretty much everyone else has given up hope that you will amount to anything positive, there is still one person who will always believe in you even when you stop believing in yourself. That person for these students is Yankumi.

I enjoyed these shows. Even though they all had the same message and the story line was pretty much the same in all three seasons it had it's own little twist to help set itself apart from the others. In the end, it's always about how Yankumi stands up for her students, believes in them when no one else will, that is what makes a teacher great.
