Buzzer Beat is a term in basketball when there are seconds left on the clock in the game or during a quarter and a player shoots the ball and it makes it into the hoop before the buzzer sounds to end the game or quarter.
Riko and Mai find a lost cell phone on the bus and thought it was fate that they would meet up with Kawasaki-san, the head coach of a professional basketball team, to return it to him so he can pass it back to one of the members of his team. When Kawasaki-san shows interest in Riko, she isn't sure if she should be happy or worried that he will hurt her like the last man she had feelings for did.
Things in Riko's life start to get jumbled up and confused when she meets Kamiya Naoki one day while he is practicing in the park near her apartment. They are so at ease with each other and can talk about anything, it's like they've known each other for years when in fact they've only met a few times and haven't even learned each other's names yet. They end up becoming fast friends and spend time together in the park. Riko and Naoki make a promise to each other to work hard and reach their dreams, Riko's dream of being a violinist and Naoki's dream of being a star basketball player, never giving up until the very end.
Slowly, Riko starts to fall for Naoki. Her heart is broken when she learns that he has a girlfriend. Riko then decides to try harder to seriously develop feelings for Kawaskai-san, who adores her, and just be friends with Naoki.
This isn't just another typical sports drama. Sure you have your main sport, in this case it's basketball, but they've also thrown in a mix of classical music. There are also more love triangles then I've every seen in one single drama. A touch of unrequited and this is quite the busy drama. It has a little bit of everything to keep everyone satisfied or to keep one person from getting bored with the same old story. Thrown in a few attractive Japanese men with no shirts on and you have yourself a happy time. Of course, there are also cheerleaders for the guys out there.
Here is a fan made video for Buzzer Beat. It focuses a lot on Riko and Naoki. I tried to find a video that showed a little bit of everything to give a better idea of the story, hopefully this will give some idea. Enjoy.
